Workshop Description

This is a hands-on workshop for teachers and administrators with varying levels of experience in the development and use of Performance-Based Assessments in all subject areas. Jay McTighe and Chris Gareis will:

1.  Introduce a peer critique protocol for reviewing and evaluating PBAs and then guide participants working collaboratively in small groups through the use of the protocol as they review and critique sample PBAs.

2.  Model a process for developing rubrics in an effort to strengthen PBAs and to help teachers to make sound instructional decisions.

3.  Assist and provide feedback to peer groups as they use the protocol to review and revise PBAs that they have developed in their school divisions and classrooms (or sample PBAs provided to participants). 
 
This workshop differs in the following ways from the September 26 "Assessing for Deeper Learning" conference at UVA sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and Jobs for the Future:
 
•  The workshop is hands-on – participants will be collaborating in small groups to critique and review sample PBAs developed by the Virginia School-University Partnership (VSUP) as well those developed in their school divisions and classrooms.
 
•  Information about online resources for PBAs and rubric development will be provided.
 
•  Criteria for quality PBAs will be cross-referenced with the VDOE's guidelines for locally developed alternative assessments in order to facilitate the work within school divisions to replace identified SOL tests.

 
Presenters

mct Jay McTighe brings a wealth of experience developed during a rich and varied career in education. He served as director of the Maryland Assessment Consortium, a state collaboration of school districts working together to develop and share formative performance assessments. Prior to this position, Jay was involved with school improvement projects at the Maryland State Department of Education where he helped lead Maryland's standards-based reforms, including the development of performance-based statewide assessments. He also directed the development of the Instructional Framework, a multimedia database on teaching. Well-known for his work with thinking skills, Jay has coordinated statewide efforts to develop instructional strategies, curriculum models, and assessment procedures for improving the quality of student thinking. In addition to his work at the state level, Jay has experience at the district level in Prince George’s County, Maryland, as a classroom teacher, resource specialist, and program coordinator. He also directed a state residential enrichment program for gifted and talented students.

ar Christopher Gareis, Ed.D., is a Professor of Education at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, where he teaches courses in curriculum development, instructional leadership, and classroom assessment. He began his career as a high school English teacher and varsity soccer coach. He also taught middle school English, science, and mathematics, and subsequently led two different middle schools as an assistant principal and then as principal.  Additionally, Dr. Gareis served as an assistant to the superintendent, with responsibilities in strategic planning and facilities design. In 2001, he joined William and Mary as an Associate Dean, directing the teacher preparation program and developing a network of partnership schools and clinical faculty in support of teacher preparation and school counselor education.  As a faculty member at William and Mary, Dr. Gareis has worked with schools, school districts, and state departments of education in the areas of classroom assessment, instructional leadership, curriculum development, teacher evaluation, teacher compensation, strategic planning, and mentoring.

Registration Information

The conference fee is $200 for each participant.
 
Registration fees include breakfast, lunch, parking, and Internet access. 
 
The registration deadline is Friday, January 13, 2017.
 
Notification of cancellation must be sent by email to Liza Scallet, the VASS Administrative Assistant, by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2017 . . . or you will be billed in full.
 
Pre-Payment is not required. However, if you would like to pay now by credit card or PayPal, you will be provided with a link to the VASS online payment portal after you submit your registration.
 
If you do not pay by credit card at registration, the person whom you identify below as the Billing Contact will receive an invoice for payment after the conference. 
 
If a purchase order number is provided on the registration form, it will be referenced on the invoice.
